  • To read and write "Hiragana"
  • To read one through twelve in "Kanji"
  • To answer to "What is this?" questions.
  • To greet, write his/her name, understand the teacher's instructions, answer "yes" or "no" in Japanese etc.

  • To write about 100 "Kanji".
  • To read about 350 "Kanji".

  • To summarize stories.
  • To use polite Japanese-"Keigo" etc.

What students will learn:
  • To read, write and understand up to 5th grade level "Kanji". (about 350)
  • To write and speak about yourself, your family and your school.
  • Common proverbs.
  • Gender differences in spoken Japanese.
  • Japanese culture through song, manga, house, letter etc.
  • To have a conversation.

What students will learn:
  • To read and use up to 6th grade level "Kanji". (about 600)
  • To write and speak their opinion about war and peace, spiritual values of zen, importance of environment and volunteer activities, etc.
  • Japanese culture through Japanese history.
  • More complex conversations inserting more natural expression.

High school students can earn a foreign language credit through our class instruction in the majority of high schools.
At the end of the school year, the student will take a credit test at the Kyodo System head office. Based on the result of the test and general evaluation, recommendation of the grade and the verification of the total hours of instruction the student received will be sent to the student's high school.

Qualification

Students have to be in the ninth or higher grade in their high school.
